All you need to know about Wolfcaster 1992
The lead behind Wolfcaster, @kleingabriel gives us some insights into the upcoming title, Wolfcaster 1992
I’ve been fortunate enough to get in contact with Gabe, CCO / Creative Director @ Saitama LLC and the director of the upcoming anticipated game, Wolfcaster. Just recently, the team announced another smaller title with simplified gameplay and graphics called ‘Wolf Caster 1992’. A prequel to the main title that is expected later on.
If the title doesn’t automatically give enough information about the theme of WC 92’, the team told me it will be a 2D side scroller with 16-bit style graphics. A more retro and simplified version, but still, very story rich as you’ll see in my discussion here with Gabe who went very in-depth about the story behind WC 92’.
The storyline behind Wolf Caster 1992
According to Gabe, the structure of Wolfcaster will be split into 5 chapters, he goes into detail…
Wolfcaster 1992 will be one big story divided into 5 chapters. Each chapter is a game on it’s own and follows the story of a different character in the Wolfcaster franchise. They are like prequels to the upcoming animation, while the manga will be origin stories.
He needs to recover a magical artefact of great significance and return it to their group.
You will need to beat the 4 first chapters to be able to play the final chapter and get to the final objective: finding the Legendary Saitama Ghost Wolf.
How will the game mechanics work?
Wolfcaster 1992, as mentioned above, will be a 2D retro side scroller, but in addition to that, the mechanics will revolve around the hack and slash genre. This is to keep familiarity and simplicity - something that goes perfect with classic retro games.
By the way you play through levels and chapters will form the equation that calculates your score. It will push for you to practice more and more, to perfect your playing to get better scores. And this will be the basis of the play to earn mechanics.
You will fight to subdue evil spirits, defeat Ghoulves and even human foes from a mysterious paramilitary group that is trying to jeopardize Tristan’s quest.
Gabe and the team are putting in extra work so that the game reaches the territory of the AA games. Game mechanics also will be including abilities for item collection and use of magic. You need to know what magic to cast at a given time to pass certain challenges or level obstacles.
Will there be DLC?
Yes, the first iteration of chapter 1 discussed by Gabe above is just part of chapter one, in total, it’s expected that there will be 5 chapters. The other 4 chapters will be DLC that users can decide to play. DLC will the the main components as each DLC will serve as its own game, just playing a different Wolfcaster character.
The first chapter included with the game will be called “The Jaguar’s Whisper”. It will follow the story of Tristan Silverstone, a 21 year old Wolfcaster apprentice that goes on his first solo mission requested by his master. It is expected Tristan will be part of the base game and the first main character people will play.
You won’t need to own all DLC or have completed the prior DLC. Since these will include individual stories, every purchased chapter is playable at any point, however, Gabe mentions the last chapter requires all the other chapters to be completed because it requires all the characters in each chapter to reach the end point, chapter 5.
The first DLC, “Two Suns In The Sunset”, (second chapter), will feature the story of Kamali, the Ethiopian Wolfcaster where you can undertake stories and use mechanics exclusive to Kamali.
In summary, each chapter will be a unique game and story, all linked to the final chapter.
How’s development going?
Gabe told me that he’s feeling more confident revealing things, hence why he decided to give me some juicy information regarding the game here. Just recently, Gabe flew out to Mexico in order to gather artefact and historical ideas, designs and information about historical remains. The awesome thing is that we can expect to see these things within a chapter.
I can tell you from being in talks with the Saitama Studios, that the team is heavily dedicated to both titles. The more recent one, WC 92 goes beyond that, with the level of attention to detail of triple A titles. The fact Gabe has flown out to find relevant and accurate real world examples to include, shows the this isn’t just an average game to be spit out for fun, it’s serious and the team is very passionate about the end product.
So when does it launch? When can we see it?!
Gabe has told me the game itself is less than a few months away. They really want to vigorously test what they release, and again, test it endlessly to ensure the game is not only story rich, but it needs to have enjoyable controls and fluid gameplay to keep the player engaged.
However, the good news is that we’re finally going to see some gameplay very soon regarding Wolfcaster 1992. Gabe has told me to keep our eyes open for some gameplay likely from chapter 1 that will drop soon.
Thanks to Gabe once again for taking the time out of his busy schedule to give me some more information about Wolfcaster 1992 that I can pass down to the community.
